One View on Finding Joy During the Holiday Blues

With the holiday season just around the corner, I wanted to take a moment to connect with all of you.

When I first made the move to DFW back in 2016, I found myself grappling with the challenges of being far away from my family. Combo that with juggling the demands of an 80-hour workweek and navigating the complexities of an incompatible relationship, the holiday season often felt like an uphill battle. Eventually my partner and I parted ways, and she returned to my hometown while I chose to remain in Dallas to continue my career. I wrestled with the loneliness that was a result of it and unfortunately it is all too common during this time of year. I want to take time to acknowledge the difficulties that people face and how I have learned to handle them over the years.

Unwind and Recharge

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the holiday rush, it's crucial to carve out some time for self-care. I get it; finding a moment to yourself during this time can feel like an impossible luxury, but trust me, it's a necessity. So go ahead and mark off at least one evening a week on your calendar for some good old-fashioned me-time. Whether it's soaking in a blissful bubble bath, getting lost in a compelling book, or simply relishing the magic of classic holiday movies, let this be your personal sanctuary. You’ve more than earned it.

Find you balance

While the holiday season is often synonymous with non-stop social gatherings and endless festivities, it's equally vital to honor your personal boundaries. If you're someone who feels overwhelmed in large groups or quickly exhausts your social energy, it's okay to take a step back and create some space for yourself. At the same time, it’s important not to isolate yourself because of this. Take time to discover what your needs are and surround yourself with the kind of folks who lift your spirits and radiate positivity.

Set realistic expectations

As we gear up for the celebrations, let's do ourselves a favor and set some realistic expectations. Trust me, the pressure to craft the perfect holiday experience or hunt down the ideal present can quickly spiral into a stress-inducing ordeal. Embrace the beautiful messiness of life and relish those imperfect yet incredibly special moments that make the holidays truly unforgettable.

Navigate the holidays blues

If you’re like me and you find yourself grappling with the weight of emotions like loneliness or loss during this season, please know that you're not alone. It's crucial to address these feelings in a healthy and nurturing way. Whether it's seeking professional guidance or confiding in a trusted friend or family member, taking that step can make all the difference.

I want each and every one of you to remember that you're a valued part of this community. DFW Young & Social isn't just a name; it's a promise of friendship and support. Let's lean on each other, lift each other up, and make this holiday season a time to cherish.
